Statement

Talia Kuhlmann's work navigates the delicate intersections of memory, identity, and chronic illness. Through expressive, medium to large-scale paintings in oil and acrylic, she explores how illness reshapes not only the body. but one's perception of time, self and memory. Her practice often incorporates animal metaphors and symbolism, using creatures as emotional vessels to embody states of fragility, endurance and transformation that are difficult to portray directly.

Her process begins with drawing, evolving into layered canvases where colour becomes a vessel for emotion; evoking grief, nostalgia and quiet resilience. Animals emerge within these spaces as both companions and placeholders, reflecting internal conditions. Animals such as zebras are a common recurring animal found in Kuhlmann's work due to the link to the chronic illness EDS. These symbolic presences allow her to approach chronic illness uniquely, suggesting its weight without having to fully define it.

Often inspired by old family photographs, her scenes feel both intimate and ephemeral, blurring the boundary between recollection and dream. Loosely rendered figures and abstracted environments mirror the fragmentation of memory and the bittersweet labour of healing. Within these shifting spaces, human and animal forms coexist, creating a visual language that speaks to the complexity of inhabiting a body that is marked by illness.

Kuhlmann's paintings invite viewers into a contemplative space that holds vulnerability with care. Through symbolism and layered imagery, her work reflects on the quiet, unseen dimensions of living with chronic illness, offering a sensitive exploration of endurance, adaptation, and the ongoing negotiation of self.
